THE HISTORY OF THE FESTIVAL

On November 21st of each year in Italy, since 1898, the Tree Festival has been celebrated.

In 1951 a circular of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry established that the “Festival of the Tree" should take place on November 21st of each year, with the possibility of postponing this date to March 21st in high mountain municipalities.

The celebration was held regularly at a national level until 1979, when it was delegated to the Regions that manage it locally.

WHY CELEBRATE TREES

Trees are our greatest allies against the climate crisis.

In particular in urban areas, where 2050% of the world's population is estimated to live by 70, their contribution can be fundamental: in fact, they improve the stability of the land against hydrogeological instability, increase soil permeability, helping to mitigate the effects of extreme weather events, retain air pollutants, muffle noise, and absorb CO2.

Greenery in cities greatly reduces heat: if placed near buildings, trees can reduce the need to use air conditioners with significant energy savings.

Planting trees is therefore an easy-to-implement opportunity to improve public health and well-being in our cities.

Piazza Copernico has always been committed to promoting a more sustainable world, and joins this day of celebration to urge greener cities and commitment to defending our botanical heritage.
