OBJECTIVES:

The educational objectives of this course are as follows:

  • acquire new knowledge on the risks currently present in the digital reality and on the psychological problems that users may encounter;
  • stay up to date on the sources of new addiction mechanisms, which are defined as "new addictions", such as smartphones and related notification systems, social media, loot boxes, gacha games and freemium games;
  • become familiar with the new terminology used to describe digital phenomena increasingly present in everyday life and also in clinical practice, such as nomophobia, captology, gamification, phishing, catfishing, hate speech, flaming, cyberbullying, fake news and others;
  • be of help to those who suffer the negative effects of new online scams, romantic scams and other types of online cheating that people can easily incur, both through preventive interventions and through clinical practice;
  • acquire skills with respect to the risks of the use of new technologies in developmental age;
  • learn the persuasion techniques used by social networks and apps and the cognitive biases that allow these techniques to take hold on users;
  • acquire ways to effectively prevent the major issues and digital problems, starting from the comparison with empirical data;
  • to know the authors who have dealt with these issues, so as to be able to autonomously investigate the topics they deal with.

 

CONTENTS

This course illustrates the particularities of some themes, such as persuasive technologies, digital ludopathy and internet addiction mechanisms.

We talk about forms of digital hatred, such as hate speech, flaming and harrassment, and the most common types of online scams are examined, including phishing, catfishing, the man-in-the-middle technique and romantic scams.

In addition, the risk factors with respect to these phenomena and the negative psychological and existential consequences they have on the people who come into contact with them are explained. Finally, prevention and treatment tools are provided for the clinical professional who is in contact with patients subject to these problems.
